Visit to Trails End Camp - 28-30 August 2009

Last weekend we visited the Army's adventure training facility at Trails End Camp which is about 4 hours drive from Ralston. The facility provides both summer and winter activities. In the summer mainly horse-riding, rock climbing, hiking, kayaking, white -water rafting and moutain biking. In the winter skiing, snow boarding, ice-climbing and dog sledding. We were lucky enough to stay in a V.I.P. log cabin within the grounds, which to Holly's delight overlooked the horse paddock. The following morning after a somewhat troubled night's sleep (the girls were sleeping on bunk beds!) the tougher members of Team Carver went on horseback. No guessing who was walking like John Wayne the following day and it wasn't the most senior member of the party! The girls were led for about 15 minutes on their horses Ringo and Little Digger. Amy's face said it all - she grinned from ear to ear the whole time. We then travelled to Sundance Lodges where we checked in to our accommodation (a tent) and completed a gentle raft ride down the Kananaskis river (pronounced can an ass kiss). Check out my wetsuit and our colour coordinated life jackets! This was great fun and the girls loved it. It was then on to Canmore for some dinner and a little look around before returning to the tent for what turned out to be a very cold night's sleep. As soon as the sun went down the temperature dropped dramatically to the extent that there was frost on the windscreen of the car in the morning. After Stuart had rustled up a full cooked English breakfast "a la camping" style we visited the home of the husky dogs used for winter sledding. The girls were very excited, but I have to admit I was little shocked by the conditions in which they are kept. They do not receive regular exercise in the summer and have to be permanently chained to their kennels. All in all it was a great action packed weekend.
