Calgary City Break - Oct 2009

It's October 9th and the temperature in Calgary is minus 10. Not the best conditions for a weekend break, especially when most of the children's attractions are outside! However we can't change our plans as we are collecting our first visitor (my mum) from Calgary airport on Sunday. We pack the car with what ever winter clothing we have (not much yet!) and set off on a two and a half hour roadtrip to Canada's sunshine capital.

On day 1 we ventured by tram to the city centre to begin our adventure 160 metres above ground level with a trip up the Calgary Tower. On the observation deck you are greeted by a 360 degree panoramic view of the city, prairies and Rocky snow capped Mountains. For those that dare (not me!) there is a glass floor providing breath taking views of the street below your feet.

On day 2 visited the TELUS World of Science, which is similar to the Science Museum but on a much smaller scale. It has lots of interative exhibits for the kids and a fantastic Discovery Dome theatre where we saw a film about the ocean. The film is projected on a screen which completely surrounds the audience giving the most amazing sensations. We then braved the cold weather conditions and went to the zoo. Sadly most of the Canadian animals like the bears and cougars had been temporarily moved, but the highlight for me was the hippos and the lions getting up to some kinky business right in front of the viewing station! This prompted some difficult questions from Holly and so ingenius answers by her father!

Our final day was reserved for Calaway Park (western Canada's largest outdoor amusement park) however on the day it was closed due to "inclement weather"! So we decided to pay a visit to the Olympic Park, the site of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games which continues to function as a recreation and athletic training facility. We then got a chinese takeaway and waited until it was time to collect mum from the airport. Mum arrived safely and next day we made our way back to Ralston.
