On The 10th May we went to collect Dad and Helen from Suffield, having taken a Greyhound coach from Calgary. They arrived in Canada a few days previous and had a fantastic journey from Vancouver to Calgary on the Rocky Mountaineer train. It cost a small fortune and although they didn't see a bear they tell me it was worth every penny. Dad brought the good weather with him and we had 10 very warm days. Lots of relaxing in the garden watching the birds and wildlife with a few trips to "The Hat" - Value Village to pick up some summer weather clothes (they had only packed their thermals!) and Police Point Park where we saw pelicans hunting for fish on the river.
On 15th May the residents of Porton Place decided to celebrate the coming of the good weather and gather out front for a street BBQ. It was a lovely evening, the kids played in the road and roamed from garden to garden whilst the adults drank alcohol out of "go" cups and brown paper bags (it is illegal to have alcohol in a "public place," except to carry or transport it in a bag). We had just bought a Holly a new bike to encourage her to learn to ride and during the BBQ she just started to ride it. She had a little bit of peer pressure as her friend and neighbour learnt to ride a day or two before, but it was an amazing moment which brought tears to my eyes as we all clapped and cheered her on. She was so proud of herself and to top it off Daddy came home from work unexpected to witness her new skill. See video below of Holly riding her bike the following day.
On 18th May the circus came to town and a large crowd of us went along. The girls enjoyed watching the horses and elephants perform. The elephants were the best part of the show but I have to say in this day and age there is something not right about it. These elephants were made to perform like dogs and I found the whole thing a little disconcerting. I don't think we will be going next year.
On 22nd May Dad and Helen returned to Calgary and the girls were sad to see their Grandad leave.
