Spruce Meadows Masters 2009

This year's Spruce Meadows "Masters" Show Jumping Tournament was held on 9-13 September. It is a international championship just outside Calgary which is attended by some of the best riders around the world, including Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Mexico, Norway, Italy, the United States and of course Canada. Stuart and I were invited to be guests of the British High Commissioner on British Day, Sunday 13th. This involved us being part of an official party parade across the International Ring, presentation of the King's Troop and Household Cavalry and raising of the Union Jack whilst the Light Cavalry Band played God Save the Queen. It was highly embarrassing as we were stood in the middle of the ring, introduced individually by name and photographed and filmed live on Sky Sports. During this time the girls were being wined and dined in a separate stand watching with utter amazement.
It was a fantastic day with lots for the girls to do and see around the Spruce Meadows complex. There were music and dance stages, dancing and show bands, shopping opportunities, playgrounds, ice-cream parlours and lots of lots of horses, both military mounted and in stables. Sadly I didn't get to see as much show jumping as I would of liked due to hosting committments, but we had seats in the British Patio Suite which were located at ground level immediately overlooking the ring, which Holly loved. Next year we plan to go for the whole weekend.
